Back in Action: Foreign Fatherhood & Bilingual Parenting

It’s been a while. Thanks for bearing with me! I’ve been wanting to bring this blog back to life for quite some time. Maybe it’s because of the New Year, but I’m back and committed to building this blog and sharing my experiences, motivations and thoughts on being a foreign father bringing up bilingual kids in Japan.

I’m also hoping to share some pointers on how I’m trying to elevate my girls’ English proficiency by making English a part of their daily lives, which I hope you find useful, whether you’re in a similar position to me or looking to improve your own language skills.

So, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’ve lived in Japan now for eight years (cliché incoming but time does indeed fly). My wife’s Japanese, and we’ve got two haafu (Japanese for 'mixed') girls with very different personalities and interests. We’ve moved around a lot and lived in different places (Hong Kong + Malaysia) as a family, but Japan is now home. Never say never, but I feel the nomadic life is behind us and we’re looking to build foundations here that will last long into the future.

The reason for this somewhat self-indulgent introduction is that I think it’s important to set the stage and give you a glimpse of where I’m coming from. The blog posts I’m hoping to share will be based on my own personal experiences and perspectives. What has worked for me may not necessarily work for you, but my hope is that it guides you in figuring out what suits you and your family best.
